CHILD ABUSE PREVENTION
1 IN 10 CHILDREN WILL BE ABUSED BEFORE THEIR 18th BIRTHDAY.
PREVENTION TIPS
-
Learn the signs of child abuse and neglect, and share that knowledge with others in your community. Being informed can help you recognize when something may be wrong.
-
Encourage open, honest conversations with children. Let them know they can talk to you about anything and that their feelings are important. Teach them about personal boundaries and body safety.
-
Stay actively engaged in your child’s daily life. Know their friends, activities, and routines. A strong bond with your child can make it easier to spot any changes in behavior or mood.
-
Pay attention to changes in behavior, physical signs like unexplained injuries, or emotional signs such as withdrawal or fear of certain people or places.
-
Teach and model appropriate behavior by using positive discipline techniques. Set clear expectations and consequences, and avoid using physical punishment, which can escalate.
-
Talk to your child about healthy relationships, and make sure the adults in your child's life—teachers, relatives, caregivers—share the same commitment to safety.
-
Keep an eye on your child’s online activities. Set guidelines for screen time, monitor social media use, and be aware of who they are communicating with online.
-
North Carolina is a mandated reporter state. In North Carolina, anyone who suspects a minor is being abused, neglected, or dependent is required to report it to the local Department of Social Services (DSS) and law enforcement. More information about how to make a report can be found here.
-
Offer support to families who may be going through difficult times. Sometimes, abuse stems from stress and a lack of support. Reach out to family members or neighbors who may need help.
-
Participate in school activities, community events, and programs that promote child safety and well-being. Awareness and community support play a key role in preventing abuse.
-
Help children develop empathy and compassion for others, which can reduce bullying and abusive behavior. Modeling respect and kindness helps foster a safe environment for everyone.
DARKNESS TO LIGHT
Darkness to Light (D2L) is a non-profit committed to empowering adults to prevent child sexual abuse. Their evidence-informed training influences community behavior change at individual, community and societal levels to improve health and overall well-being. Through their work, D2L empowers adults and organizations to bring child safety to their own communities.
In our community, we actively help prevent child abuse by offering the Darkness to Light: Stewards of Children training. This evidence-based program empowers adults with the knowledge and skills needed to recognize, prevent, and respond to child abuse.
Through interactive sessions, participants learn practical steps to protect children and create safer environments at home, in schools, and throughout the community. By raising awareness and equipping individuals with the tools to take action, we foster a culture of safety and prevention for every child.
